GÖCEK CLIMATE

The summer season starts in May and continues until the end of October in this typical Mediterranean city. It is very hot in summer and because of this Göcek guests spend their days at the beach or near the pool. March and April are the months for observing nature awaken with spring. The eco tourism season starts in these months. The temperature is not lower than 10 Celsius in the winter and reaches almost 40 Celsius in the summer. Sea swimming is comfortable for at least nine months of the year.

Göcek region enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate with dry hot summers and rainy mild winters. In recent years gradual changes to weather conditions have occurred due to global warming, for example in the last three years winters and summers have both been warmer than previously with the temperature reaching 42 Celsius in August 2006 while rain levels decreased 40 % in the 2007 winter.

Average temperatures are; 30-36º in summer, 3–10º in winter. A maximum 52º Celsius occurred on 27 June 2007; a minimum -4º Celsius on 9 February 1976. During the last 40 years it snowed once here on 19 December 1992 and reached a thickness of 3-4 cm.

The Karacaören, Gökçeovacık and Taşbaşı areas are a little colder because of their altitude of 400-1100 m. But İnlice and Göcek are very hot in the summer. The night-time breeze from over the mountain relieves the region and people who live here.

Farmers and other folk who live close to nature arrange their lives according to months, years, storms, rains, cloud colour and formation, wind direction, phases of the moon and even movements of ants in accordance with ancient experience.

‘Meryem Fırtınası’ (Mary’s Storm) starts on 15th October, ‘Balık Fırtınası’ (Fish Storm) starts 27th October and the winter season starts in mid December. Old people interpret whether the rain will come or not depending on cloud colours and the phases of the moon and arrange their farming accordingly. When thunder moves east, dryness will start, if it is cloudy in the mornings at the beginning of the month (in the Rumi Calendar), it will be a rainy end to the month. If ants pile up their food to the south like a crescent, it will be rainy. If the crescent’s tip turns to the north, it will be windy. If the clouds scatter from the west, it will be clear.
